Clavius crater , is the third largest visible on the Moon and also one of the oldest craters on the Moon. Clavius is approximately 225 km (140 miles) and was formed by an asteroid impact about four billion years ago. Although it is well preserved, Clavius show his age through several small craters impacts within that later formed.
Clavius is located on south of the crater Tycho, coordinates 58.4 ° S 14.4 ° W. It is named after German mathematician and astronomer Christopher Klaus (1538-1612), whose name was latinized Christop Clavius.
