Astrophotography. Taruntius crater on the Moon.




Taruntius (56 km) is located southwest of Mare Crisium basin and the northern Mare Fecunditatis. It is a crater that can not be seen with ordinary binoculars, but through an astronomical telescope.

On the northwestern edge of it, we distinguish a small crater named Cameron (11 km).

Taruntius is surrounded by a pile of debris excavated from the impact. In the center are two peaks attached together.

HD Video by astronomical telescope. Taruntius crater and western Crisium basin

These are astronomical telescope HD video images with Taruntius crater (56 km) and west of Crisium basin on the eastern Moon, as seen from Earth.


  The night of 30 to 31 January 2012 was one with an atmosphere quite clean, but very frosty. Images consequently come up to be satisfying with video camera mounted on the telescope.


In this video, I have extracted several frames in Registax program, to form some clear pictures that can be seen in the article: Taruntius crater and on the border of area Mare Fecunditatis-Tranquillitatis. Telescope Images .


  Also at 3:00 minute, the telescope moves it's attention to craters north of Taruntius, at Proclus (28 km), the bigger one Macrobius (64 km) on the west of the Crisium basin, and the beautiful crater called Picard (23 km)  located on Mare Crisium. Taruntius crater on the border of area Mare Fecunditatis-Tranquillitatis. Telescope Images

Images in this article captures eastern Moon, south-west of Mare Crisium. Here, we see central in all images, Taruntius crater (56 km), which is not deep in contrast to its size. On the floor of the east, is Rimae Taruntius.

  This crater, is between the two basins, Mare Tranquillitatis and Mare Fecunditatis. Between the two, there is located a mountain range called Montes Secchi. These mountains are not seen in these images, being further south.

   Notice a small crater located on the north-west of Taruntius. That's Cameron crater, only 11 km in size, with a conic shape. This form is visible under other lighting conditions.

On Taruntius's floor, we can distinguish several peaks located centrally. Other notable craters in this images, are Lawrence (24 km), Da Vinci (38 km), Asada (12 km) and Watts (15 km).


  Images are processed in Registax, of a video that have taken more shots, merged to form a single image.

Video Taruntius crater on the Moon.

Taruntius (56 km), is a crater located between Mare Tranquillitatis and Mare Fecunditatis. This video has inverted images as seen through the telescope. The atmosphere was very bad, but the idea is good to know where the crater is.
