Grimaldi moon crater by telescope. Astronomy science



We see in these images an area of the west side of the Moon where the crater Grimaldi (430 km) takes its deserved place among the craters with which can not be compared because of its large size. Located on the western edge of Oceanus Procellarum basin, Grimaldi is laced around the edges in contrast with darker smooth floor, flooded by lava in the past.
The Moon Terminator stops right at its western edge, leaving however be noted sunlight the western interior wall.

Grimaldi is rather a flooded basin of lava, and has a round not oval shape as seen from Earth because it is located on the Moon's edge. Its margin does not have ordinary walls like other craters, but is so destroyed that was transformed into hills and irregular peaks.

 In the picture below are labeled craters and other lunar features in the region. To better understand this photo, you should note that the label with the name or the letter of larger craters could be found at their center, and on the small craters, you should find them around them, usually above.

View of Aristarchus through telescope.




Aristarchus (40 km), is one of the isolated craters on Oceanus Procellarum. It is a crater that if it was located elsewhere on the Moon was less taken into account, easily overlooked because its size is not very large.

Even in this area through binoculars it would be difficult to see it in this phase of the Moon. But when the Moon is full, Aristarchus can be easily distinguished because of its strange colour albedo on its floor and walls.

Sony handycam Astrophotography Marius Reiner and Hermann craters on the Moon.

Marius (41 km), is a flooded crater and here at this stage , we can better observe the smooth floor and sharp edges with no prominent collar as the other craters. Around it are scattered small craters , many of them  being its satellite craters .

Marius crater is one of the largest in size in the area of Oceanus Procelarum Basin , being most evident in these images from the west Moon.
On the floor of this crater is distinguished a smaller crater called Marius G , but there are many others around Marius, and its satellite craters are listed in the labeled image below.
South west , there is a crater named Reiner (30 km), also isolated, but unlike Marius it has an obviously central peak not being flooded by lava.

On Reiner's south west, is an even smaller crater called Hermann (16 km) . Between the two are 247 km . All Continuing southwest , we meet Damoiseau H (45 km), a crater which only half of its edge remained untouched, and Damoiseau (37 km) . From here it begins a high area , which stretches to the unseen Moon.

Video crater Kepler and Marius in darkness through telescope.

Kepler (32 km), is a crater located on Mare Imbrium. This one has a ray system from the impact that created it, which spreads on a large lunar surface. These rays are intertwined with those of Aristarchus crater located far north of it. These rays are quite visible in these videos through the telescope.
Southeast of Kepler, 113 km far, is a crater that although similar size, don't have a ray system and is less deep,
called Enke (29 km). A comet and this crater are named after the German Astronomer, Johann Franz Encke.

The filmed area in general is devoid of other
notable craters, given that there are large basins of lava that on which are scattered several small craters, and several regions with high peaks.
The crater on terminal (there is not the edge of the Moon), is Marius
(41 km), , which to me is in a unique situation, because I have never seen it in such conditions, filled with darkness. Also, I didn't know that it has an outer rim with a collar so high and so big.

Video through the telescope West of the Moon

These two clips of the west of the Moon, has several craters in the overwhelming light of the Sun.

Video 1 starts with a large area called Oceanus Procellarum south of the crater Aristarchus.
Then comes the images of the extreme terminal west of the Moon. At second 28, the crater Grimaldi, is observed as dark stain, left.
At second 42, crater Byrgius appears directly in the center, with Byrgius A which has an albedo very high, and rays that extend from it, over 400 km.
From minute 1:06 is crater Schickard.

Video 2 shows a whole Moon, with craters mentioned above, if you look west of it.

Oceanus Procellarum-Lunar Mare Astronomy Video by telescope

Oceanus Procellarum (oʊsi ː ˌ ənəs prɒsɨlɛərəm, Latin for "Ocean of storms") is a vast region on the west of the Moon. Its name comes from an old superstition for it's appearance during the second quarter, announcing bad weather.
Oceanus Procellarum is the largest sea of the Moon, stretching more than 2592 km over the north-south axis and covering about 4 million km2, but is still smaller than the Mediterranean sea on Earth.

Like all lunar seas, Oceanus Procellarum was formed by old volcanic basaltic flood eruptions wich covered the region in a thick flat solidified magma.

On its edges are several small bays and seas, like Mare Humorum, and Mare Nubium on south. Northeast, Oceanus Procellarum is separated from Mare Imbrium by Montes Carpatus (Carpathian Mountains). On the northwest edge of the sea,is crater is Aristarchus ray crater of 32 km. Copernicus crater is located in the eastern edge of the sea, with its bright rays spread on the darker material.

Kepler crater

    These three photos are snapshots of a video.Vignetting is visible on the edge of the images but I did not cut it because for not losing some regions.
       Today I will analyze the second image, and I'll write something about Kepler crater (32 km) from the center of the photo.
       Kepler is a crater that lies between Oceanus Procellarum and Mare Insularum west to the east. In the southeast is the crater Encke (in a photo 1 is to the east, in photo 2 is on the west by Kepler).
       Kepler is most notable for the prominent ray system. The rays spread around over a distance of 300 kilometers, which overlap with other craters.One of Tycho's rays that extends on the Oceanus Procellarum, intersects with Kepler.
       Other craters that
 are visible in photo 2: Marius crater (41 km.)-one with a perfectly round shape north of Kepler (and Marius A under him), Reiner (30 km.) top-most in the middle,and Aristarchus (40 km.) on the right on the picture.

Crater name is taken from the german mathematician, astronomer and astrologer Johannes Kepler (27.12.1571-15.11.1630). He is best known for his laws of motion of planets. Astronomers, later, codified this laws by his works : Astronomia nova and Harmonices Mundi.
